Schedule
BASIC FUNCTION:
Coordinates interpreting services and
provides interpreting services for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Functions as Lead Interpreter in coordinating
schedules of staff interpreters and serving as liaison between staff, instructors
and students. Mediates between student and interpreter, as needed, to resolve
problems.

Recruits hourly interpreters and keeps
them informed of current policies and procedures.

Assures that schedules for interpreters
are maintained.

Coordinates with program director regarding
policies, procedures and changes in operations.

Interprets, in the classroom, between
students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and hearing instructors and students.

Acts as resource to faculty and staff
on issues related to deafness or refers them to sources where such information
is available.

Cooperates with faculty to address the
special needs of students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Advises supervisor of matters of concern
with regard to instructors or students.

Tutors students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
-
Interprets written material, if such interpretation
does not conflict with an instructor's requirements.

Provides information to outside agencies
related to issues of the deaf community.

Communicates with other interpreters to
develop standardized signs for vocabulary specific to certain courses and
to insure consistency of high standards.

Interprets for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing
at various departments on campus as needed. Interprets phone calls as required.

Interprets for educational situations
outside of the classroom such as teacher conferences, field trips, club
meetings, special lectures, etc. Interprets off-campus related assignments
such as job interviews, bank transactions, rental offices, etc.

Interprets for faculty and staff who are
deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Assists in planning and presentation of
sign language classes for faculty and staff.

Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited high
school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Associate's
degree or Bachelor's degree preferred. National certification from the
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Graduation from Interpreter Training
Program preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Four (4) years interpreting experience
dealing with deaf/hard-of-hearing students, preferably in the post-secondary
educational field.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of the college programs and
procedures relating to deaf/hard-of-hearing students. Knowledge of deafness,
sign language and the deaf culture. Knowledge of current trends in deafness
related issues. Knowledge of basic mathematics. Ability to use a computer.
Ability to communicate with deaf/hard-of-hearing students. Ability to interpret
for deaf or hard-of-hearing persons. Skill in sign language. Supervisory
skills.
