POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Purchasing Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Purchasing SITE: DO

SALARY SCHEDULE: Career - GRADE: 12

BASIC FUNCTION:

Performs processing of purchases, requests and requisitions received from college departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

v      Develops and investigates market for best sources of supply.

v      Maintains vendor bid list.

v      Issues requests for quotation and receives same by mail, telephone, and through personal presentation by salespersons.

v      Communicates details of purchasing arrangements to user agencies.

v      Coordinates specific buying needs as required through direct contact with departments.

v      Works with vendors, transportation companies and departments to resolve problems that arise in shipping.

v      Provides specifications for items requested by departments.

v      Recommends substitutes if commodity is unavailable, or if more economical products might be satisfactory.

v      Coordinates State Contract orders and related files.

v      Maintains communications with departments and suppliers.

v      Performs related duties as required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, supplemented by college level courses in business.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Four (4) years experience in a purchasing environment as a buyer.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of purchasing procedures and practices. Knowledge of the sources for various items ordered by the college. Communication skills both verbal and written. Knowledge of sentence structure and word usage. Computer skills. Knowledge of mathematics and basic accounting. Ability to deal with employees and vendors.
