POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: International Student Officer

DEPARTMENT: International Center SITE: Various

SALARY SCHEDULE: Career - GRADE: 5

BASIC FUNCTION:

Performs student services functions in assisting and advising international students. Involved in recruitment and retention of international students. Serves as college liaison between international students, faculty or staff and Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

v      Prepares application packets to be mailed or given to international students. Keeps information up to date with current tuition fees, college and INS requirements.

v      Keeps abreast of new INS regulations and procedures and shares information with college officials, international students, faculty and staff.

v      Makes the initial contact with the international student and refers student to admissions for appropriate testing and placement.

v      Prepares receipts and deposits International Student Fees and SPJC Application Fees.

v      Informs students of transfer credit evaluation services for International Universities.

v      Prepares I-20, Certificate of Eligibility (INS) Form, and instructs student as to disposition of this form.

v      Determines budgets for international students; i.e., living expenses, in addition to tuition and books.

v      Enters application into computer system and into various screens needed to track international students.

v      Maintains student folders on campus and insures that high school transcripts, passport information, medical insurance proof has been received.

v      Maintains a database of information on each international student’s status and submits to College Registrar each semester.

v      Monitors students’ progress on a continual basis to determine status and make necessary contacts with students and/or INS.

v      Determines eligibility and prepares work authorization for student for on-campus and off-campus. Obtains appropriate signatures. Disseminates appropriate information as to proper procedure for applying for work.

v      Prepares correspondence for students, letter of eligibility; completes forms from various countries on financial information and continued eligibility to remain in the United States.

v      Attends various meetings with INS, conferences and workshops as available.

v      Keeps up to date with new federal regulations and laws by perusing the Federal Registers on a monthly basis.

v      Attends ESL and International meetings at the college as needed to be consistent on each campus.

v      Prepares purchase orders and receiving reports when ordering new manuals, forms, etc.

v      Organizes orientation week, facilitates workshops and seminars and prepares and updates International Student Manual.

v      Coordinates activities for the international student populations.

v      Performs related duties as required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Associate's degree or a year of accredited college work and appropriate International student experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Three (3) years experience in an institution of higher education in student services, student development or related area working with international students.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of academic departments and programs in an institution of higher education. Knowledge of the techniques used in recruitment and retention of international students. Ability to relate to students in the specialized area of assignment. Verbal and written communication skills. Computer skills. Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff.
